Description of 22-J Memoirs of Lt.Gen. Lane Fox Pitt-Rivers 1905
1. - 26. Written by H. St.George Gray of Taunton Castle in February 2005, this shows how General Pitt-Rivers, who died in 1900 at the age of seventy three, not only solved vast archaeological and ethnological problems but by his researches he raised new ones to be explained by scientists of the 20th century. The general was born Augustus Henry Lane Fox in 1827, educated at Sandhurst, and during a distinguished military career became fascinated by anthropological and ethnological influences. This evolved into antiquarian interest and happily he had both the time and money available to allow him to conduct very thorough research in this area in various parts of England and Ireland which are discussed in detail. He was also a naturalist of some repute and a Fellow of the Zoological Society. Page 23 & 24 give a long lists of the Societies and Institutions with which the General was associated.
