Description of 4-F Front Street

1. Two sepia shots of the Barn on Front Street (one of the oldest buildings in the village), showing also the slope into The Beck providing a watering place for the village's cattle.

2. A view of the cattle slope and the Saxon Barn together with a view looking down on The Square from Almshouse Hill in 2003

3. The old butcher's shop at the bottom of Front Street before it was demolished in April 1994 and a view of The Square looking towards Front Street showing the former shop converted into a cottage

4. A view of Front Street when the Great North Road ran through the village but before the War Memorial was built The second photo shows the War Memorial erected in 1920 commemorating the 44 villagers killed out of the 200 who served in the First World War.

5. Two further view of Front Street, one showing the village school on the junction with Clifford Road possibly dating from late 1920s/early 1930s and a later view (1950s?) taken from that junction looking towards The Square

6. Two colour shots of Front Street, similar to those in Item 5 but taken in about 2000

7. Wood's Stores in Front Street in the late 1920s showing Mr. Wood on the right with Mr. Cundall of College Farm

8. Front Street looking down from the junction with Back Street towards the Clifford Road junction taken in 1994, plus a view of The Garage on the Clifford Road junction taken in 2000 (It was originally erected in 1954).

9. A view of Front Street looking down towards the Clifford Road junction, showing the school on the left and the original Garage building on the junction, erected after the First World War. The second and earlier photograph shows Front Street at about the beginning of the 20th century
