Description of 25-C Photographs

1. Bramham Village Square 1941

4. A view of All Saints’ Parish Church taken from the Old Vicarage looking across the churchyard. (Possibly 1920’s)

5.  Red Lion Hotel 1930’s
Mr Hearfield was landlord.  He employed Joe Knight who sold vegetables and fruit around the village. He kept his cart in the pub yard. Previous landlords were, Mr James Greenshaw, Mr Lindley and Mr Stead.

 Taken from the top of what is now Wetherby Rd. but was then The Great North Road

7. War Memorial in the  Village Square. (1930’s)
The house and shed next to the Red Lion were owned by Sam Smith Brewery and were used as a butcher’s shop and slaughter house by Mr Fisher. Later the shed was used as a garage by Mr Harland who lived opposite.

8. The Square in the early1950’s.
 The two storeyed building behind The Bay Horse Hotel was once used as stables but in the late 40’s it became a glassworks called Venetian Lights. It was then demolished in the mid 50’s. The Bay Horse became a private residence in the early 1970’s

9. The Square looking towards Tenter Hill
The cottage covered with foliage was once the home of a family called Hunt. They had eight children one of whom was called Bramham Moor! The building became a newsagent’s then a barber’s and finally a butcher’s. It was demolished in 1994.

10. Front Street1920’s
The shop on the left was owned by Mr Sanderson who also owned the garage which was opposite. Mrs Sanderson ran the shop and also the Bed and Breakfast. The shop was a newsagent and fruiterer but she also sold ice cream which was popular with the pupils of the village school .Further along the street was a Chapel which in later years became the village store and Post Office. At the time of this photograph the A1 (then the Great North Road) ran through the village .

11. The Square and Front Street early 1920’s
The War Memorial was erected in 1920—note the poppies. Bramham was the first in the area to erect a Memorial after the First World War. 200 men form the village fought in that war and 44 were killed. 

12. The Square pre 1920
Beyond the house on the left was a shop owned by Mr Hudson who sold hats. Opposite was Mr Summersgill the plumber. Behind the house was a yard in which the gasworks operated during World War 1.In the 1930’s the business was run by Mr Thornton and his son and later by Mr Exton. Mr Harland the saddler worked in the house with the railings.

13. Low Way 1935
The shop is called Brumfitt and Booth and appears to have been a very useful shop which stocked a variety of goods including boots, shoes and children’s sandals costing 2/6d and socks at 6d a pair. It was for many years the Post office. On the left of the picture is the Methodist Chapel built in 1817 and renovated in 1906  The four cottages were demolished in th1939 and the land used by Mr Burns as a small holding during the Second World war. The shadows cast were made by four cottages which were demolished in 1941. This area of the village was owned by the Headley Estate.

Raphael Tuck & Sons was a business started by Raphael Tuck and his wife in Bishopsgate in the City of London on October 1866, selling pictures and greeting cards, and eventually selling postcards, the latter being the most successful. Their business was one of the most well known in the 'postcard boom' of the late 1800s and early 1900s. Their contributions left a lasting effect on most of the artistic world. During , the company headquarters, Raphael House, was destroyed including the originals for most of their series. The company never fully recovered.

16. Cottages on Tenter Hill

17. Tenter Hill 1913
 In the 19th century the house on the right was a school for girls run by Miss Bownas.  At the beginning of the 20th century it housed a butcher’s business run by Mr Hebron The house opposite was The Grange which had previously been owned at various times by a Miss Celia Ledgard,a Mrs Challoner and a Captain and Mrs Thompson). It was divided into three dwellings by Bramham Park Estate.

18. Petrol Pumps at Harland’s Garage
Mr Harland started out as a saddler then he repaired bicycles, sold gas mantles and cycle accessories. His sister, Miss Harland worked as a dressmaker in the house and a doctor from Aberford used a room there as a surgery. The pumps were removed in the mid 1970’s and the building is a private house.

19. The Village Pump
This was once the only source of water for some people in the village. The pump had two spouts one for drinking from and one for wagons to use. It was removed in 1952.

20. Bowcliffe Hill
This was once the route of the Great North Road as it descended into the village. On the left was the entrance to College Lane where the lodge to Bramham College once stood.

The A1 passes the farm and the castellated building on the left is The Fox Inn mentioned in the 1867 Trade Directory  but not in the 1901 census.

27. Wetherby Rd. 1920’s showing Tate’s General Store and Brown’s sweetshop. Round the corner was a fruit and vegetable shop owned by Mr and Mrs Bowman.

28. The Great North Rd.1920’s.
 The village school is on left and Mr Sanderson’s garage, built just after the First World War is shown a little further down. (The present garage was built in 1954) The shop on the right was a tailor specialising in riding and countrymen’s clothes.

29. Front Street 1960’s

30. The Village School mid 1920’s
The school was built in the 1830’s on the site of an earlier school mentioned in the 1821census. Mr Walker was the Headmaster from 1890 -1932. he was succeeded by Mr Hargreaves and later by Mr Banks, In 1944 the school came under the West Riding County Council .In 1966 a new school was built and the old one demolished and a house built on the site.

31. The Brickyards
 The brickyards were in operation in 1851. These 4 back to back houses were built next to the brickyard but were demolished in 1964 to make way for the first bypass.

34. The Lych Gate ( not long after the Porch was built in 1902)
 Mr John Lloyd ,MP for Ripon who lived in the Old Hall erected the Porch in memory of his wife Susan Frances who died in 1872. Mr Sam Varley the sexton is shown in the picture.

35. Pupils of the Methodist Sunday School 1920’s pictured outside the Methodist Chapel in Low Way.

36. Tenter Hill (Thorner Road. .) post1991
 On the 6th of July 1991 Tenter Hill was closed and so Bramham had no access to or from Thorner until December 1991 when the second bypass was completed. The slip road to the A1 North was on the left and entry to the village was by going under the bridge.

The farm entrance on the right was demolished for the building of the first bypass in the early 60’s.

The butcher’s shop was demolished in April 1994 during the alterations to A1 at the beginning of the 1990’s.

40. The Great North Road pre First World War
The stone wall on the left was there prior to the building of the Council Estate. On the right is Milnthorpe Farm. The two people pictured are Herbert Tindall and Mary Summersgill.
