Description of 24-F Village Employment (II) Diversity
1. Three reasons are given for the large number of non agricultural occupations serving the village’s needs.

Blacksmiths .wheelwrights
Saddlers, farriers.

3. Growth in amount of village shops and carriers with regular journeys to Leeds and York. Every local train was met by an omnibus and coach. Food processing –water mill and wind mill. There were six butchers and a baker.
Decline in the village based economy by 1897.

4. Rural Industry. The flax mill at Clifford was a source of employment for Bramham women. A large number of teachers were living in Bramham due mainly to the presence of Bramham College which catered for 127 pupils aged 9-18. The College employed 10 servants.
5. There were eight teachers employed at the Village School.
Religion. There were both Established and Non-conformist ie Church of England and two strong non-conformist chapels (Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist.
Inns and Alehouses(beerhouses) were together with the churches important centres of business and leisure.
6. Bramham was-a self sustaining community.
There were two almshouses catering for the poor but at this time there was only a small number of unemployed and paupers, Conclusion of section. The prosperity noticeable in 1851 would decline by the end of the century.
