Description of 24-B Introduction. The Village in Context
1. The 1851 census has limitations in that it cannot give a total perspective of the community. Nor can the information on this one village in Yorkshire give a general picture of all English villages. The question is; what gives a village its individuality?
2. The aim of the study is not to show Bramham as an example of any19th century English village but to study Bramham as__ a village in all its’ individuality. The geographical; and historical context of the village. Links to Fig 1, Fig 2 and Illus. 1
3. The brief Historical context continues ,(from pre conquest to mid 19th Century ).
The two dominant landlords were George Lane Fox and Lady Hedley Their vital importance to the village.
4. Landlords’ acreage (link to Fig 3). Agriculture is the key to the survival of Bramham. Climate and soil conditions assist the practise of mixed agriculture. By mid 19th century political and economic changes call for adaptation in farming.
5. It was a time of transition. Technology was advancing and the urban market expanding. Farming had to adapt.
6. Communications improved because of road and rail caused by huge growth in mechanisation. Link to Fig 4
