Description of 22-H Country Life Articles on Bramham Park 1921on

1. - 3. Article by Arthur Oswald Relates how Robert Benson, later Lord Bingley, built the house on a virgin site between 1700 and 1710 using his considerable knowledge of architecture to act as his own architect, possibly with assistance; he also laid out the gardens. It gives details of his parentage, his early life and his political achievements. Included illustrations are: 1. Monumental piers and sphinxes flanking the entrance to the forecourt, 2. The stables seen from the south colonnade, 3. The wide-spreading entrance front with the ramped approaches, 4. The entrance doorway and steps going up from the paved terrace for coaches, 5. The garden front and north wing, formerly the chapel, 6. Elevation of the entrance front and plan from Vitruvius Britannicus, Vol II (1717)

Meditations on the origins of the design of the house and of the gardens and the influence that other stately homes may have had. It goes into more depth on family history and into details of the garden layout and of the house construction. Included illustrations are: 3. The south and west elevations, 7. The north garden house, now the chapel, 8. The Head of the T canal, 9. Looking south over the water basins, 11. The Broad Walk, looking south. (Quality of all illustrations 'poor')
