Section 1-B Low Way - Town Hill - Church Hill

Description of 1-B Town Hill Images

1. A description of the origins of some of the houses in this section of the road together with information on residents there after World War 1. The diagram mentioned appears in Items 6 & 7.

2. A black & white photo looking down the hill with a similar colour shot taken in 2000. A brief history is given of one building that no longer appears in the second picture.

3. 4. & 5.A three page history of Undercliffe and its occupants from 1817 to 2000 with a colour photo of the house c. 2000 on the final page.

6. & 7. A current photo of the houses on this stretch of road together with a plan showing the layout in 1817 as described in Item 1.

8. Brief description of the history and occupant of early 20th century Town Hill and mid 20th century The Crag.

9. Two colour photos c.2000 of Hillside one of which also includes the building just below it that was used as a Chapel of Rest by Geoff. Wood in the late 20th century. In addition there is a 1986 write up describing Hillside as a farmhouse and a Grade II listed building, possibly dating from the 17th century, with details of its construction.

10. A B & W photo of the archway mentioned at the bottom of Item 8 and in Item 13. It linked Cragg Cottage to the cottages on the other side of The Cragg.

11. Colour photo of The Cragg c.2000 looking down towards Town Hill. Also a photo of Westwood.

12. & 13. A two page write up by Paul and Christine Leaman on the many changes to The Cottage and its occupants since it was first built ( in 1667?) together with a photo of the building at the bottom of Item 13.

14. & 15. Ancient and modern photos of Ashdown Cottage. Built about 1700, Item 15 lists the owners and occupiers from its early days up to the late 20th century.

16. A black & white photo looking down Town Hill from the entry to The Cragg and a colour photo c. 2000 taken from 50 yards further up the road.

17. 18. & 19. A letter from Vaux Brewery to Arthur Tindall stating that a conveyance dated 1892 indicates that the present pub, as shown in a superimposed colour photo dated 2000, was originally a pub and two cottages. A two page extract from a conveyance dated 1887 is also included giving further information.

20. 21. & 22. Ground floor and first floor plans of The Swan before and after the modifications of 1928. Colour photo of The Cragg c.2000 looking down towards Town Hill. Also a photo of Westwood.
